Billing itself as "Arizona's Longest Running Nature Show" the Verde Canyon Railroad is an enjoyable afternoon ride. The line opened in 1912 as a 38 mile long connection between Clarkdale and Drake, Arizona where it connected with the Santa Fe railroad. After its' current owner, Dave Durbano, purchased this freight line he became convinced the red rock cliffs of the Verde Canyon had potential as a tourist attraction. The new passenger station and the loaded trains which depart Clarkdale each day are evidence that he was correct.

The Wilderness Route
Nearly all of the Verde Canyon route is accessible at best by a 4-wheel drive and the majority by rail alone. To truly railfan the Verde would be challenging indeed. But it is a pleasure to experience as a passenger.
