Located a short drive northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada, is the Valley of Fire State Park. It is not far from the Colorado River and Lake Mead. It is isolated, however, by barren desert and not immediately discovered by travelers and settlers in the area. It was familiar, however, to prehistoric peoples who left petroglyphs in several locations as evidence of their presence. The exposed sandstones were formed from sand dunes of the Jurassic period. Captain Kirk falling to his death in the Star Trek "Generations" movie was filmed among the signature red sandstone rocks.
